How To Reduce Your Plumbing Costs

How To Reduce Your Plumbing Costs

In many cases, plumbing costs and household bills can be very high. We at Dublin Area Plumbers know that affordable plumbing solutions are important for our customers. Nobody wants to have to spend hundreds, or even thousands of euro for plumbing repairs and bills. This is why we have compiled a list of five tips to help you keep your plumbing costs to a minimum.

1. Service Your Boiler Regularly

Boiler repairs can be costly. A complete boiler replacement can cost upwards of two thousand euro. Some of these plumbing costs can be avoided by getting your boiler serviced once a year by a registered gas installer. A yearly service will ensure that your boiler continues to run efficiently. An efficient boiler is more environmentally friendly, consumes less fuel, and is much safer for the household by reducing the risk of Carbon Monoxide emissions.

2. Repair Leaking Taps Immediately To Reduce Plumbing Costs

Due to the introduction of water charges here in Ireland, it is now vitally important to control the amount of water consumed in the household. It may not seem like it, but even a small leak in a faucet can have a large impact on the water consumption in the house. A tap that drips once a minute can waste up to 30 litres of water per day, which is 10,950 litres per year. Call a professional plumber immediately if you find a leak in your household. Finding and repairing a leak early will keep your plumbing costs and water bills to a minimum.

3. Get Thermostatic Radiator Valves Installed

Thermostatic Radiator Valves are a much more cost effective way of regulating room temperature when compared to the standard hand wheel valve. TRV’s control the temperature of a room by sensing the ambient room temperature and adjusting the flow of water to the radiator. When the room reaches the desired temperature the TRV shuts the rad off by itself. It is also possible to control the temperature of each individual room by adjusting the TRV in that room. The replacement of a manual radiator valve with a TRV has been estimated to save at least 280 kilograms of Carbon Dioxide per year. They are considerably cost-efficient and prevent needless overheating by only heating the radiator when needed to maintain the optimum room temperature. Thermostatic radiator valves can reduce plumbing costs and heating bills by up to 17% a year.

4. Instal A Magnetic Filter In Your Heating System

Magnetic Filters improve the effieciency of your heating system and extend the lifetime of your gas boiler. Magnetic Filters collect the sludge circulating in a central heating system before it can damage your boiler. Central heating systems consist of iron and steel components which are vulnerable to corrosion. This can form a thick black sludge which in turn, causes a blockage in the boiler and heating system. Magnetic filters collect this sludge and prevent it from causing any blockages. They can be cleaned out easily by yourself or your plumber as often as is required.

5. Use Your Boiler To Heat Water Instead Of Immersion

Turn off that immersion switch!
Boilers are much more efficient at heating the water in your hot water cylinder than using the immersion. Heating water with the immersion can be up to 4 times more expensive than heating water with an efficient gas boiler. An immersion only heats up 3/4’s of the cylinder at best, whereas an efficient gas boiler will heat up the full hot water cylinder in a much more timely fashion, while also heating up the radiators in your house if needed. Using the boiler for hot water is more efficient in terms of plumbing costs and time when compared to using the immersion.
